Auðkúla café, geodesic dome

CLOSED

Auðkúla is a beautiful geodesic dome. Half of the dome is an indoor garden under glass with various exotic plants, the other half is under turf roof and is the home of the owners.

The architect of the dome is the widely known Einar Þorsteinn Ásgeirsson, a pioneer in dome buildings and geometric structures. He was a follower of the famous Buckmister Fuller and worked with Frei Otto. Einar and artist Ólafur Elíasson worked together for many years. Einar was far ahead of his time in environmental thinkings.

Magical forrest surrounds the dome on more the 6 ha of land with various species of trees, many of which are rarely found in Iceland. Gerður Jónasdóttir built the dome in the year 1993. She planted every tree and flower with enourmous enthusiasm making the forrest as it is today 30 years later.
